Law enforcement regularly intervenes in situations where a person is experiencing a mental health crisis. More than 69% of our sworn law enforcement personnel are certified in Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). CIT is an effective law enforcement response program designed for first responders who handle crisis calls involving people with mental illness, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders.

Data on domestic dispute incidents include both verbal and physical reported cases (“Domestic violence” means any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member. However, the statistics here measure only verbal disputes and domestic batteries). Based upon the classification of the domestic incident, additional services are provided by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office was the first agency in the state to conduct LAP (Lethality Assessment Program) and we continue to use that program today as a way to ensure victims of intimate partner violence receive services to mitigate additional risk. These cases usually follow a multidisciplinary team approach from initial incident through the court process.

Child abuse or neglect investigations are usually conducted in collaboration with the Department of Children and Families. There are many mandated reports that include medical personnel, teachers, caregivers, etc. Many times our School Resource Deputies take an active role in these investigations. We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to child abuse investigations.

Burglaries are a crime that can occur day or night. We work hard to process the scene of all burglaries and analyze the evidence to solve the crime. Our crime analysts and detectives work with local, state and federal authorities to make sure that all relevant information is investigated and shared and reviewed.
